CavLibrary Makerspace Planning Phase

CavLibrary is excited to launch the planning phase of a library makerspace.  We hope to launch this creative extension of our library services in the fall of 2016.  As with anything, our plans are currently small, but, we hope with growing interest and community support, we will be able to grow our space to meet the creative needs and interests of our students and faculty.

Go ahead, I know what some of you are thinking. What is a makerspace? Well, you may find many definitions, but I tend to return to these two descriptions from the Open Education Database and Diana Rendina:

“Makerspaces, sometimes also referred to as hackerspaces, hackspaces, and fablabs are creative, DIY spaces where people can gather to create, invent, and learn. In libraries they often have 3D printers, software, electronics, craft and hardware supplies and tools, and more.” (

“A makerspace is a place where students can gather to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover using a variety of tools and materials.” Diana Rendina (

As we plan for this new addition to our library, we could use your help. Do you have abandoned Legos, K’Nex, and arts and crafts supplies in a forgotten closet or attic? If you do (and you are willing to part with them), we would love to take them off your hands for possible inclusion in our maker lab. You may bring any items to me in the library.

As always, we are excited to see what the future holds for this creative venture. Won’t you join us?

Blessings all,

Mrs. Nichols
